Which countries are in Schengen?

Last updated

The Schengen Area has 29 countries in 2026. Days in any of them add up toward one shared 90-day limit. Days in the European countries outside Schengen do not count. The Schengen calculator knows which is which.

The 29 Schengen countries

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Bulgaria
  • Croatia
  • Czechia
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Iceland

  • Liechtenstein
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Romania
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland

That is 25 EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Croatia joined in January 2023. Bulgaria and Romania joined for air and sea travel in March 2024 and fully, including land borders, on January 1, 2025.

Is Ireland in Schengen?

No. Ireland is in the EU but not in Schengen. It shares the Common Travel Area with the UK and sets its own entry rules. Days in Ireland do not count toward your Schengen 90.

Is the UK in Schengen?

No. The UK has never been in Schengen. It has its own visitor rules, and many visitors now need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before they fly. Check GOV.UK. British travellers going the other way should read the 90/180 rule for UK citizens.

Is Cyprus in Schengen?

No, not yet. Cyprus is an EU member but has not joined Schengen yet, so days there do not count toward the Schengen 90. Cyprus applies its own short-stay rules.

Is Croatia, Bulgaria or Romania in Schengen?

Yes. All three are full members, so their days count. This catches out travellers who used Croatia as a "reset" country before 2023.

European countries outside Schengen

Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus, Georgia, Ireland, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Kingdom. Each sets its own visa rules, so check before you go. Travellers often spend time in these countries while their Schengen days come back, as explained in how the 90/180 rule works.

Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City

These microstates are not members, but they have open borders with Schengen neighbours and no border checks, so in practice your time there is treated as time inside the Schengen Area.
